Chad Smith On Red Hot Chili Peppers Hiatus

In the Last interview with Chad Smith about Chickenfoot, the ‘supergroup’ he’s formed with Sammy Hagar, Joe Satriani and Michael Anthony, he said that Red Hot Chili Peppers were on a hiatus, taking a one-year break, before getting back together. It’s been well over a year now and there are still no news about the band and when or if they are planning on getting back together and creating new music. In recent interview with John Frusicante, after he’s new solo album The Empyrean, he firmly stated that there are no plans for Red Hot Chili Peppers to reconvene. “We’re on a hiatus of indefinite length,” he said on that occasion, “There’s other things to life.”

This time, musicradar asked Chad Smith about the future of the Red Hot Chili Peppers again.

“We’ve been on a break for a year and whatever,” Smith said. “I can’t speak for John – he’s doing his thing and hopefully he’s happy – but I think when we’re all ready to play again, when we feel like it’s time to be the Chili Peppers again, we’ll do it.” It is unsure if John Frusciante is the reason for the band’s extended hiatus, but the famous drummer said: “You can’t force anybody to play who doesn’t want to,” he explained. “I’m not naming names. I’m just saying we all have to feel that the time is right to get it together.”

Chad Smith also explained that even though his first impression was that they would get back together after a year, the added time could be a blessing “A year off might have been optimistic,” he said. “Maybe it’ll be two years, maybe more, who knows? It’s been a very positive time in our lives, actually “The thing is, we’ll only get back together for the right reason: to play music with one another. That’s the only agenda this band adheres to.”

As for now, all members seems to be occupied with their solo works, and projects – John Fruscinate just released his solo album, Anthony Keidis is busy turning his life story into an HBO show, Flea has gone back to school to study music, and Smith is proud to be part of Chickenfoot. “Chickenfoot has turned out to be everything I could’ve hoped for,” Smith enthused. “When people hear this album, they’re not going to believe it’s us; they’re going to think it’s four other guys. It’s far exceeded my expectations and goals.”

As for the future of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Chad Smith seems to be enthusiastic, “Hey, if I can be in two hit bands, like, wow, what a problem,” he said with a laugh, “A drummer should be so lucky.”

I am wondering what will happen and when we will know for sure if there will be any more new music. I hope for the best. But since they are happy with their current projects for now, we should all just leave it at that. When all members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers feel like getting back together and reviving the special chemistry they had, I have no doubts they will do just that and surprise us with another masterpiece.
