Review

The Red Hot Chili Peppers was the bands’ self-titled 11 tracks’ debut album, released in 1984. Its sound clearly represented funk style, fast rhythm and deep groove melody with Anthony rapping his lyrics very quickly to audacious heavy guitar and bass sounds. Apart from having Anthony Kiedis at vocals, the bands’ line up back at the time was: Hillel Slovak – guitar (Jack Sherman as his replacement), Flea – bass, Jack Irons – drums (Cliff Martinez as his replacement).

The songs that stand out from these 11 tracks on the album, both lyrically and instrumentally are certainly True Man Don’t Kill Coyotes and Get Up and Jump. However, The Red Hot Chili Peppers was a critical and commercial failure – it didn’t chart in the Billboard Hot 200, instead, the few reviews that were published of the album were negative. But, this first failure didn’t break the band down, and they continued working and producing more music.
