Review

Mother’s Milk, a fourth studio album, released in 1989, was the Red Hot Chili Pepers’ first real breakthrough. Continuing what they began with in their previous album The Uplift Mofo Party Plan, but improvising the sound in a more melodical but still hevy metal way, Red Hot Chili Peppers once again proved their strenght, even without two former members – their great friends. Jack Irons was replaced by a new drumer, Chad Smith and John Frusciante replaced deceased Hillel Slovak. Mother’s Milk is a great combination of all new elements that the two of them are about to integrate in this band.

Starting with the powerful tune and lyrical rapture of Good Time Boys, followed by a brilliant interpetation of the Steve Wonder classic Higher Ground all 13 tracks on this studio album are exuberant, carefree, pure punk rock songs. However, the band proved that their main ispiration – funk, never died, it just changed its form. Apart from from going gold and putting the band on MTV, Mother’s Milk has sold in more than 2 million copies, making this record a greatest musical success yet.
