Review

Freaky Styley, their second album, released in 1985. was off to a totally different, more funkier direction than to what they had started previously. From this album, it’s easy to notice the importance and the influence every producer has on the band and their music. Geogre Clinton, a king of the funk, made a major influence on the band, bringing their talent and their music to a new dimension, inspiring them to write and create some great songs. None of them really stands out, but that’s because they’re all strong, in a special and different kind of way. Also, return of Hillel Slovak as a guitarist brought back that unique energy the band was having when creating together.

These 14 tracks, ranging in themes and melodies, have nothing but the same ‘funk feel’ in common. However, the song I’d like to single out is, without any doubt, the song after which the album got its name – Freaky Styley – because they gave it a unique feel with long, cheerful instrumental play, and a simple few words’ lyric. All the tracks on Freaky Styley are more playful and relaxed than the songs from their first album, but still daring and freewheeling. The funky energy is jumping right at you from every jam and every verse, being proud of its presence, making Freaky Styley their funkiest record up to date.
