Interview With Chad Smith By Francisco Fernández

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

Let’s make a little break from all the rumors and what ifs, and while we’re waiting for official news, let’s enjoy Chad’s company. Here is yet another interview with Chad Smith done by Francisco Fernández, from Argentinian Red Hot Chili Peppers website – FunkyMonks.ar I am just going to post some parts of this interview, related to Red Hot Chili Peppers, and you can read the whole thing on Francisco’s website – FunkyMonks.ar, or you can also download and listen the whole interview here:

Chad, we know that the Chili Peppers are performing on the 29th of January, Neil Young tribute concert… are you going to play a new song apart from Neil’s cover? Is there someting you can tell us about the concert?

CS: I think it’s for the Grammys and around that time they do as always, honor an artist, this year is Neil Young and a lot of people are going to be doing Neil Young songs, he’s gonna be there, obviously. So we’re just really honored to be able to play this great music, we’re just gonna do one song, ’cause like 20 people are playing, bunch of different people, I don’t what song we’re gonna do yet but ? wrote Neil.

I don’t want to bother you with questions of the Chili Peppers, but we have heard rumors about the band situation for almost three years and we would like to know what plans the band has after this concert

CS: Well, we’re writing songs right now, you know, we’re gonna make another record and it’s going really well, we have a great time, we just needed to take a break, we’ve been playing… you know, being a Chili Pepper is a full time job [laughs]. You know, we write songs, we record them and then we go on tour on tour for a long time. We did that for ten years pretty straight, and we just thought it was time to take a break and do other things and live our lives, be with our families and come back fresh with your batteries recharged and once again make new music. That’s why we took the time off, we’re not breaking up or anything, it was just a break and now we’re back and everybody is really happy to be back playing.

That’s great! Well we heard that you have recorded four new songs with the Peppers. By the way, congratulations. Some of them have pianos and it seems to be something different from what you have been doing all these years. What can you tell us about the new sound of the band?

CS: Well, I can’t talk too much about it because it’s really in a early stages, you know, we write music for a long time and get a lot of different things before we end picking what, you know, it’s going to be songs and what’s gonna end up on CD’s. So I don’t want to say “Yeah, there’s gonna be piano”, we’re just doing whatever feels right and whatever people in the group wants to bring to the table. You know, it’s gonna be different. Always different, a very honest representation of what we’re doing at the time. So that’s what I can say…

Chad Smith Talks About His Bands

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

That’s right, yet another interview with Chad Smith where he talks about his music and all three bands he plays in: Meatbats, Chickenfoot and Red Hot Chili Peppers. After everything that he’s been working on lately, no wonder he is the center of attention!

antiMusic: Considering I would imagine when it’s time for the Chili Peppers to do their thing, you spend a lot of time jamming out with Flea. What do you get from this band that is different than that kind of experience — just less of a familiarity?

Chad: When you play with somebody for over 20 years, there’s sometimes just no words needed. There’s an unspoken connection, that’s a very special chemistry. It’s based on the same thing, you know. It’s improvising, and jamming; that’s how we came up with a lot of these songs. That’s where a lot of Chili Peppers songs come from too. It’s just a way of thinking where you can really inject your personality into the music when everyone is involved with the exception of a songwriting situation. You know instead of a guy brings his demo, he’s all finished, and here, play this drum machine beat, you know whatever.

And you know, people who want you bring what you do to the table are smart-(laughs) because it’s going to make it more unique. It’s going to make it sound, you know, it just sounds better to me when everybody is involved. Because then everyone is encouraged to have their musical input and it’s just going to make that sound more unique, when it has that chemistry of the different personalities coming out through the music. And that’s really what we do. That’s what’s happening in the Meatbats. Everybody’s doing their thing and together we have a certain sound and a chemistry and I just think that’s the best way to make music. It’s honest. It’s real. It’s from the heart. It’s from your soul. And I think people connect with that. It’s the kind of music I like to hear and so it’s the kind of stuff I want to make.

antiMusic: You’ve said in other interviews that Chickenfoot is not a side project. It’s a real band. How do you view the Meatbats?

Chad: Well, we all live in L.A. which is great, you know. We play whenever we can and everybody’s cool with that. Luckily, it’s not like some other bands where it’s “OK, you can’t do it. We’ve got to get somebody else”. There’s no pressure. I think maybe the other guys would like to be able to play a little bit more and travel. Once the record comes out hopefully people will get into it, and I would like to do too. But uh, I just gotta say no to things at some point. (laughs) I have a family at home, and I can’t travel as much as I used to. I’ve traveled a lot with Chickenfoot since May and my wife is very patient… but I have a feeling that she would be really upset if I said, “Hey, I’m going to Japan a week after I get home.” So, you know, we’ll play wherever we can. It’ll just make it that much more special you know. It’s not like we’re some big huge touring band, with 59 people working for us. It’s not like a Chili Peppers thing. It’s just the four guys. We set up our own stuff. And we go play. It’s cool. I like that. It’s so different from some of the other situations that I’m in. I start playing with these guys, just for the love of it and that’s great. Really. It’s good for me to play to 90 people and with no singing, no light show. You’re just there. It’s all music and that’s what it’s all about. It’s why I started playing. And I want to continue to do that. It’s fun and I want it to be fun and stay fun. When it’s not going to be fun anymore, then I’m not going to do it.

This is just a part of the interview where he talks about Red hot Chili Peppers, and the importance of his other two bands and how he sees his role in every one of them. To read the rest of this great interview by Morley Seaver, go to MorleyViews. Enjoy!

New Interview With Chad Smith

Friday, September 18th, 2009

Chad Smith gave a new interview for CraveOnline. He talked about his band Meatbats, and of course there is a lot about Red Hot Chili Peppers. This time though, he gives us much more. Go on and read a part of the interview where he talks about Red Hot Chili Peppers and enjoy!

CraveOnline: How are you gearing up mentally for the Chili Peppers to kick back into gear?

Chad Smith: It’s all good! I’m ready, it’s gonna be fun. We haven’t played in two years, so that’s the longest we’ve ever not played together.

CraveOnline: There’s been a lot of concern over that, since you’ve been gone for so long. And John (Frusciante, RHCP guitarist) made a couple comments a while back on how he’s got no intention of diving back in..

Chad Smith: Yeah, he wasn’t too anxious to get back & get going. But one way or another, we’ll get going.

CraveOnline: How do you reconcile all those personalities at this advanced stage in your careers?

Chad Smith: I just try to do what’s right for the music in whatever situation I’m in. I just feel like it’s always fun to play different stuff and keep shit fresh. I just have to play, man. I just can’t not do it. I’m fortunate that I’m able to find people as passionate as I am about playing music and keeping it fun. It’s important to be artistically fulfilling, but at the same time you gotta enjoy yourself, man. It has to be a fun thing.

CraveOnline: In terms of relating to or playing off the different guitarists you’ve worked with through the creative and recording process, is there a comparison to be made? Dave Navarro is a very different player than John, but your One Hot Minute album was so damn good.

Chad Smith: Dave is more of a reactive player.. or at least he was with us, where John will initiate a lot of the ideas, come in with parts and ideas and such. With Dave, if you presented him with an idea, then he could come up with all kinds of stuff. But he wasn’t a real instigator in that regard. And that’s not taking away at all from his abilities as a musician – people just work creatively in different ways.

CraveOnline: The Chili Peppers’ creative approach seems to be very improvisational.

Chad Smith: Right. The way that we were always used to was just jamming and improvising, and Dave’s not a real jamming and improvising kind of person. Some stuff came out of that, but Flea was more the catalyst in coming up with ideas on that one. But that’s the main thing with John – he’ll have guitar ideas at home that he’ll come in with. In all fairness to Dave, he was stepping into a circus, you know? We had our way that we worked, and I think he worked with Jane’s Addiction in another way where Perry (Farrel) and Eric (Avery) would come up with parts and then Dave would come up with his thing. Just different approaches, initially.

CraveOnline: It’s a shame we’ll never see those songs again though, because it’s such a fantastic record.

Chad Smith: Yeah. But John’s… John is John, and there’s nobody else like him. And Dave as well! We’ve just been fortunate to have played with such great musicians. The material just doesn’t find a common place presently.

Chad Smith Talking About Chili Peppers

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

For those of you unbelievers ;) here is a transcript of a Chad Smith interview where he talks about Red Hot Chili Peppers, their plans for reunion and making new music, as well as the future of his other two bands – Chicknefoot and Bombastic Meatbats.

You just joked about it, but the question is, how can you divide your time between three different bands?

“Luckily, everybody is very cool about my situation. The Chickenfoot guys, who I love dearly, they’ve been great about the fact that, come October, I’m going to be doing the Chili Peppers again. They could have acted not so cool about it, but they knew going into this that I was still part of the Chilis.”

Is October when you originally saw going back to the Chili Peppers?

“Hard to say. We initially decided on a year’s break, then that turned out to be two years. It could’ve been longer. It’s been a very fruitful time for us: I did Chickenfoot and the Meatbats, Flea went back to school, Anthony’s been doing a TV project.
“It was important to be people again. We’ve traveled, had babies, hung out with our families – lived our lives, you know? So now we’re very fired up to give the Chili Peppers our all.”

Do you have any demos written?

“There’s ideas floating around. One of them dates back to 1999, I think. Flea, Anthony and I did jam recently. That felt good. But as far as demos go, we’ll just start writing in October.”

What about John Frusciante? He’s the one guy who’s always been in question. In fact, earlier this year he told me that he had “no plans” to do anything with the Chili Peppers.

“I know he said that. Like all of us, he was coming out of a real Chili Peppers pressure-cooker. I’ll be honest: I haven’t seen John, but Flea had a sit-down with him recently, and from what I understand it was very positive. I have every reason to believe that, come October, we’ll all four be making music again as the Chili Peppers. John’s a very important component of the band. I love the guy. He’s an incredible musician.”

This is just a part of the original interview where he talks strictly about Red Hot Chili Peppers, and I think we should soon expect to read some more articles and interviews from their recording studio! Red Hot Chili Peppers On Extended Hiatus

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

Yesterday, in an interview, Chad Smith denied the rumors about Red Hot Chili Peppers splitting up. However, they are still not planning on making new music. Instead, they just seem to be enjoying themselves with their solo projects and their well deserved break!

As Chad Smith said in the interview he has given for British Q Magazine:

“No we haven’t split up,” he insists “We’re not playing right now, but shit, man, we played a lot. It was time to take a little break and live your life. We’re not some conveyorbelt”.

However Smith confirmed that: “Everybody’s kind of doing their own thing right now” but Smith claims the band – also including guitarist John Frusciante- are planning to “reconvene at the end of September or October”. “We make music when it feels right you cant force people to do stuff. If you’re not feeling it, so why do it? Do other thing and come back to it re-energised”

So they are coming back with some new tunes, it’s just a matter of time now :) it seems that they just extended their break, and hopefully, we’ll hear some new, fresh Red Hot Chili Peppers music when they come back in September!
